Subject: JomClassified Membership Levels >>> versus <<< Joomla UserGroups

Hello, JomClassified Experts,

I am one of the administrators of the Corvair Society of America (CORSA) website. We recently upgraded JomClassifieds on our Joomla site and now we have a problem.

Our Joomla-based website has pages that are publicly-accessible and other pages that are only accessible to "CORSA Members" - a Joomla UserGroup. Naturally, the website cannot tell if a visitor is a CORSA Member or not unless the visitor logs-into the Joomla site with a username and password. From what I can tell, the system then checks to see if username and password entered by the visitor matches those assigned to a bona-fide club member. If there is a match, the Joomla Menu expands and allows the visitor to read the extra pages accorded to CORSA Members.

The only people who have usernames and passwords are members of our club. When a person joins our club, our national office gives that person a username and password. The member's username and password remains intact until his or her membership expires or he or she changes them. The latter nearly never happens.

Every since we installed the upgraded version of JomClassifieds, we have received many complaints from club members who, despite logging-in correctly, receive an error message informing them that they do not have login credentials. At that point, they are barred from seeing those web pages to which they should have access, including but not limited to our JomClassifieds-based "Post an Ad" web page.

At the back-end of the system, JomClassifieds requires one or more Membership Levels to be established. These are somewhat like Joomla UserGroups and are intended to enable the website administrator to charge visitors certain amounts of money, depending on the number of ads the visitors wish to post and the length of time the ads will remain active.

We do not charge our club members for posting ads. The right to post ads is a perq associated with their membership. And so, we have no need for the JomClassifieds Membership level feature. Nevertheless, JomClassifieds requires us to establish at least one Membership Level, and we have done so. It is a "Free" Membership Level, with zero fees.

Any club member who logs-in has automatic access to our JomClassified "Post an Ad" webpage. The Joomla Menu setting for the "Post an Ad" webpage only allows visitors to access that page if they are (a) in the CORSA Member UserGroup, and (b) logged-in. That is why we have no need for the JomClassifieds Membership Level feature.

Yet, we believe the JomClassifieds Membership Level feature is interfering with our club members' ability to log-on to the website. Why? Because the Membership Level feature seems to over-ride the Joomla UserGroup setting for many, if not all, of our club members.

How can this be true? Because, when setting up a Membership Level, the software requires our administrator to specify the Joomla UserGroup to which new JomClassified members will be assigned.

So, instead of the Joomla Usergroups determining the kind of JomClassified Membership Level to be assigned to a particular visitor, it seems that just the opposite is occurring. In our case, the tail is wagging the dog.

Is there a cure for this? Can we get rid of the JomClassified Membership Level feature? We already have a hundred or so folks who posted ads and, among other things, have a Membership Level associated with their respective JomClassified accounts.

Please advise us what to do.

Please open your admin panel and click Components --> Jomclassifieds --> Memberships. Here edit the Membership plan and check the "Assign to Joomla Groups" field. Here select the same user group assigned by your system.
